When I first started planning a trip to Aulani, I found myself asking the same question that comes up for a lot of people: which island is Aulani Resort on? Hawaii has several islands, and if you’ve never been before, it’s easy to mix them up. I assumed Aulani might be on Maui or the Big Island, but it turns out I was wrong. Aulani, A Disney Resort & Spa, is actually located on Oahu – the same island where Honolulu and Waikiki are.
This location plays a huge role in how accessible and versatile your trip to Aulani can be, especially if you want a mix of relaxation and city exploration. After staying there myself, I can confidently say its placement on Oahu was a strategic win.
Here’s everything I learned about where Aulani is and what it means for your travel plans.
Key Points
- Aulani is on Oahu, which makes it easy to get to and close to both nature and city experiences.
- Ko Olina is quieter and more upscale than Waikiki, making it great for families or adults looking to relax.
- You don’t need to stay at Aulani to enjoy it – you can dine, shop, or book a spa treatment without booking a room. Can you eat at Aulani without staying?
Which Island Is Aulani Resort On? Why Oahu Matters
Aulani is located on the island of Oahu, specifically in the Ko Olina resort area on the island's sunny western side. This area is more laid-back and quiet compared to busy Honolulu, but still conveniently close to the airport and other attractions.
If you’re flying in, you’ll arrive at the Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL) in Honolulu. From there, it’s about a 25-30 minute drive to Aulani, depending on traffic. We took a rideshare and paid around $55 each way, but rental cars are a solid option too if you plan on exploring the island.
What makes Oahu a great choice is the balance. You can enjoy calm, lagoon-style beaches right at Aulani while still having access to things like Pearl Harbor, Diamond Head, and food tours in Honolulu. I didn’t feel isolated at the resort, which has definitely happened on other tropical vacations.

What to Expect from the Ko Olina Area
Ko Olina is a master-planned resort community that’s home to not just Aulani but also luxury neighbors like the Four Seasons and Marriott Ko Olina Beach Club. The area features four manmade lagoons with calm, swimmable waters and soft sandy beaches. These lagoons are perfect for paddleboarding, swimming, or just relaxing on a lounge chair.
Peaceful But Not Boring
While Ko Olina is much quieter than Honolulu, there’s still plenty to do. There’s a small shopping center across the street from Aulani with restaurants, coffee shops, and a convenience store. It’s also home to Monkeypod Kitchen, one of our favorite meals of the trip.
There’s also a paved beach path that connects all the resorts and offers a scenic, stroller-friendly walk with great sunset views. You can walk the whole thing in under an hour.
If you’re craving more food options or want to stock up on groceries, Kapolei is only a 10-minute drive away. That’s where we found more restaurants, a Costco, Target, and local food spots featured in our guide to food near Aulani.
How to Get There and What It Costs
Flying into Honolulu International Airport is your best bet. Most major airlines offer direct flights from the mainland U.S., and prices vary based on the season. Expect to pay anywhere from $400 to $900 roundtrip per person, depending on where you're flying from.
Once you land, transportation options include:
- Rental car ($60–$90/day, plus parking fees)
- Rideshare or taxi ($55–$70 one-way to Ko Olina)
- Shuttle service ($25–$35 per person one-way)
If you're curious about exact transit times and costs, we break it down further in this guide to how far Aulani is from Honolulu airport.
Hotel Prices at Aulani
Rooms at Aulani vary quite a bit in price depending on the season and whether you book a standard room, suite, or Disney Vacation Club villa.
- Standard rooms usually start around $500 per night.
- Ocean-view rooms are closer to $650–$800 per night.
- Suites and villas can easily go over $1,000 per night.
These prices can be a shock, but there are ways to reduce your cost. We share specific strategies in our guide on how to book Aulani for cheap, including renting DVC points or booking during slower travel months.

Is It Worth Staying on Oahu Just for Aulani?
In my opinion, yes – especially if you're already interested in visiting Oahu. Aulani has a unique draw, especially for Disney fans, but it also holds up on its own as a luxury family resort.
It’s not trying to be the most over-the-top Disney experience, which actually makes it better for adults too. You get subtle Disney touches and character appearances, but it doesn’t feel like a theme park hotel. We go deeper into this in our post about whether Aulani is worth it.
Not Just for Families
My partner and I don’t have kids, and we still had a great time. There are adult-only hot tubs, a spa, and a quiet pool area. Plus, you’re not far from hikes, snorkeling, and day trips if you want to balance out your downtime.
We break this down more in our honest review of Aulani for adults.
