If you're wondering what characters are at Aulani and how to actually find them, you're not alone. That was one of my biggest questions before our stay at the resort. Unlike Disneyland or Disney World, there aren't posted schedules or lines forming around every corner. Aulani is more relaxed, and while the characters are definitely there, finding them sometimes takes a bit of strategy.
During our trip, I quickly realized that character appearances aren't constant or advertised like in the parks. But with a little insider knowledge, you can spot most of your favorites – without wasting your vacation time chasing leads that don’t pan out.
We recently spent a few days at Aulani, and tracking down the characters turned out to be one of the more rewarding parts of our stay. You don’t have to be a kid to enjoy it either – there’s something genuinely fun about bumping into Goofy in board shorts or finding Stitch hanging out by the lagoon. Here's how it works and where to look.
Key Points
- Call the character hotline each morning: It's the only way to know exact appearance times and locations. Without it, you're just guessing.
- Don’t rely on just the app or posted signs: They rarely list the full character schedule, and you'll miss spontaneous appearances.
- Arrive 5–10 minutes early for meet-and-greets: Character appearances are short (sometimes 20–30 minutes max), and lines form fast, especially for Moana and Stitch.
What Characters Are at Aulani and Where to Find Them
Aulani features a curated list of Disney characters tailored to the Hawaii theme. Unlike the theme parks where the roster is long, here it's focused – and it fits the laid-back vibe.
You won’t find an endless list, but you will find the essentials, plus a few surprises you can’t meet at other resorts.
The Core Characters
These characters appear most frequently and are dressed in tropical or beachwear unique to Aulani:
- Mickey Mouse – Always a highlight. He usually appears in an Aloha shirt and sandals, often greeting guests at the Halawai Lawn or near Makahiki restaurant.
- Minnie Mouse – She's beautifully styled in a Hawaiian dress, and you can usually find her during character breakfast or around the main lawn area.
- Goofy – Often dressed in board shorts and a swim shirt, Goofy sometimes plays games with kids by the pool. His unannounced walk-arounds are some of the most fun.
- Donald Duck – Spotted frequently on the lagoon lawn or near the Waikolohe Stream. His beach look is one of the most charming, complete with tropical flair.
- Daisy Duck – A little rarer, but she shows up at character dining and occasionally for photos near the lobby.
- Stitch – A true fan favorite. We saw him several times during our stay – once at breakfast, and again randomly near the Halawai Lawn. He tends to draw the biggest crowds.
- Moana – Probably the most sought-after. Her appearances are always scheduled, and she’s typically found in shaded meet-and-greet areas like near the lawn or beach path. Don’t be late – her meet-and-greet times are limited.
Where to Find Them
Character locations vary by day, but there are a few reliable places where they tend to show up:
- Halawai Lawn – This is the main character meet-and-greet hub. If you only have time to check one spot, make it this one. Most scheduled photo ops happen here.
- Poolside (Waikolohe Valley) – You’ll sometimes find characters casually strolling or doing pop-up appearances. Goofy in particular loves this area.
- Near Aunty’s Beach House – Occasionally in the mornings, we noticed characters greeting families checking into the kids’ club.
- Makahiki Restaurant – If you’re having breakfast here, it’s a character goldmine. It’s the one spot where you’ll get guaranteed time with multiple characters without having to chase them around the resort.
One thing I can’t emphasize enough: Call the Aulani Character Hotline each morning from your room phone. It’s a brief message updated daily with specific times and locations – and it’s not posted anywhere else. The app and website are surprisingly vague.
The Character Breakfast at Makahiki
The easiest and most reliable way to see several characters is by booking a character breakfast at Makahiki. It’s also one of the most relaxing ways to do it – no waiting in the heat, no crowding around lawns.
During our visit, we saw Mickey, Minnie, and Pluto. Each character came to every table for photos and a brief conversation. It didn’t feel rushed, and the whole meal had a fun, laid-back energy.
If you're traveling with kids (or just want good photos), this is 100% worth booking. Even as adults, we loved it. The breakfast itself is buffet-style, and the food was surprisingly good. Expect tropical fruit, pastries, made-to-order omelets, and local dishes like Portuguese sausage.
Make your reservation as early as possible. It fills up quickly, especially on weekends and holidays. If you're wondering how much is Aulani character breakfast, just know it’s a splurge – but one that’s likely to deliver the best character experience during your stay.
Characters You Might Not See
It’s worth managing expectations here. Aulani doesn’t feature every Disney character you might be hoping for.
For example, there are no traditional princesses like Belle, Cinderella, or Elsa. And there are no appearances by Marvel or Star Wars characters.
Instead, Aulani focuses on characters that make sense in the tropical resort setting. That includes the Fab Five in vacation attire, Moana (for obvious reasons), and sometimes rare characters like Duffy or ShellieMay – though we didn’t see them during our visit.

Tips for Catching More Characters
We didn’t find every character on day one. It took a bit of experimenting. Here’s what worked for us:
- Call the character hotline early (ideally before 8am). I made a habit of calling it while getting ready for the day. Write down the locations and times, because they disappear fast.
- Bring your phone or camera everywhere. Don’t leave it in the room. Characters tend to show up when you least expect it – like walking from the pool to lunch.
- Ask Cast Members for tips. We got some of our best intel this way. One even tipped us off about a surprise appearance Goofy was making near the Lazy River.
- Be early. If Moana is scheduled for 10:15am, be at the location by 10:05am. They often close the line 10–15 minutes after the start time to manage crowding.
- Use downtime wisely. If you're waiting for your next activity, check common character spots. Early morning and late afternoon are peak times for appearances.

Other Helpful Aulani Planning Info
When you’re not tracking down characters, there’s plenty to explore at Aulani. We rented a car, and I’m glad we did – it gave us freedom to explore Oahu beyond the resort.
If you're flying in, it’s good to know exactly how far Aulani is from the Honolulu airport. Spoiler: it’s not super close, so plan your airport transfers in advance.
Also worth knowing: Aulani is not all-inclusive, and meals can add up fast. I recommend budgeting for at least one off-property meal a day. Here’s a great list of food near Aulani and breakfast spots nearby if you want to mix things up.
