Magic Kingdom roller coasters are best ridden in this order: TRON Lightcycle / Run first, Seven Dwarfs Mine Train second, Space Mountain third, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad fourth, and The Barnstormer last. That order gives you the best balance of lower waits, smart park flow, and ride payoff, especially if you want to hit the major coasters without wasting your whole day in line.
Magic Kingdom is not the most extreme coaster park at Walt Disney World, but it is one of the most strategic. The coasters are spread across Tomorrowland, Fantasyland, Frontierland, and Storybook Circus, so the order you ride them in really matters.
For most guests, TRON and Seven Dwarfs Mine Train are the two coasters to plan around first. Space Mountain and Big Thunder Mountain Railroad are still major priorities, but they are usually easier to work into the day. The Barnstormer is mainly worth prioritizing if you have younger kids.
For wider park planning, I would pair this with my main Magic Kingdom guide and my guide to the best Magic Kingdom rides.
Magic Kingdom Roller Coasters Ranked by What to Ride First
This ranking is not just about which coaster is the most thrilling. I am ranking these by what I would actually ride first based on wait times, demand, location, and how much each ride affects the rest of your day.
A coaster can be great and still not need to be your first stop. That is why Big Thunder Mountain Railroad ranks lower for ride order even though I personally think it is one of the most enjoyable rides in the park.
1. TRON Lightcycle / Run
TRON Lightcycle / Run is my first priority because it is the biggest modern thrill coaster at Magic Kingdom. The launch is quick, the ride vehicle feels unique, and the glowing Tomorrowland canopy gives it a completely different energy from the older coasters in the park.
The one drawback is that TRON is short. I like the ride a lot, but I would not want to spend a huge part of the afternoon waiting for it if the line is heavy. That is why I would either ride it early, use Lightning Lane, or build my day around getting it done efficiently.
TRON has a 48-inch height requirement, so it is best for teens, adults, and thrill seekers. If you are already focusing on that side of the park, it pairs naturally with Space Mountain and the other Tomorrowland rides at Magic Kingdom.
2. Seven Dwarfs Mine Train
Seven Dwarfs Mine Train is the coaster I watch most carefully from a wait-time standpoint. It is not the most intense coaster in Magic Kingdom, but it is popular with almost everyone: families, kids, adults, and Snow White fans.
The ride is smooth, charming, and more polished than a basic family coaster. The indoor mine scene gives it a lot of Disney personality, and the swinging mine cars make it feel fun without being too scary.
I rank it second because the line can get long fast. If you are not using Lightning Lane, this is one of the rides I would aim for early in the morning or late at night.
Seven Dwarfs Mine Train has a 38-inch height requirement, which makes it much more family-friendly than TRON or Space Mountain. It also fits naturally into a Fantasyland plan, especially if you are already doing other Fantasyland rides at Magic Kingdom.
3. Space Mountain
Space Mountain is still one of the classic Magic Kingdom roller coasters. It is dark, jerky, weird, and more intense than it looks from the outside. I do not think it is smooth, but I do think it still has a lot of personality.
The darkness makes the ride feel faster and more unpredictable than it really is. Some people love that. Others find it rough. If someone in your group dislikes dark rides or bumpy coasters, this may not be their favorite.
I rank Space Mountain third because it is popular, but usually easier to work around than TRON or Seven Dwarfs Mine Train. If I am already in Tomorrowland, I like doing it near TRON so I am not crisscrossing the park.
Space Mountain has a 44-inch height requirement, so it is better for older kids, teens, and adults. For more context on how intense it feels, see my guide to the scariest Magic Kingdom rides.
4. Big Thunder Mountain Railroad
Big Thunder Mountain Railroad might be my favorite coaster at Magic Kingdom for atmosphere. The runaway mine train setting, outdoor turns, rockwork, and Frontierland location make it feel like a full Disney experience, not just a coaster.
I rank it fourth for ride order because it is usually more flexible than TRON, Seven Dwarfs Mine Train, or Space Mountain. It is also one of the coasters I actually prefer later in the day, especially around sunset or after dark.
Big Thunder has a 38-inch height requirement. It is more exciting than The Barnstormer and usually less intimidating than Space Mountain. The back rows feel more lively, while the front tends to feel a little tamer.
If you are already in Frontierland, it can pair well with a meal nearby, especially if you are planning to eat at Pecos Bill in Magic Kingdom.
5. The Barnstormer
The Barnstormer is the starter coaster at Magic Kingdom. It is short, simple, and best for younger kids who are just getting comfortable with roller coasters.
For adults without kids, I would not prioritize it unless you are trying to ride every coaster in the park. It is cute, but it is over quickly. For families, though, it can be a great first step before Seven Dwarfs Mine Train or Big Thunder Mountain Railroad.
The Barnstormer has a 35-inch height requirement, making it the most accessible coaster for smaller kids. I would ride it early only if it matters to your child. Otherwise, save your best morning time for bigger priorities.
For a more specific breakdown, see my guide to The Barnstormer at Magic Kingdom.
Best Ride Order for Magic Kingdom Coasters
For most visitors, this is the coaster order I would use:
- TRON Lightcycle / Run
- Seven Dwarfs Mine Train
- Space Mountain
- Big Thunder Mountain Railroad
- The Barnstormer
This order works because it puts the hardest-to-time coasters first and saves the more flexible rides for later. It also avoids wasting prime morning time on a short starter coaster unless you have younger kids who specifically want it.
If you are planning a full park day, my one day Magic Kingdom itinerary can help you fit the coasters around classic rides, food, breaks, and shows.
Best Magic Kingdom Coaster Order With Kids
With kids, I would not automatically start with the biggest coaster. Height requirements, confidence, and fear of dark rides matter more than a strict thrill ranking.
For younger families, I would use this order:
- The Barnstormer
- Seven Dwarfs Mine Train
- Big Thunder Mountain Railroad
- Space Mountain, if they meet the height requirement and like dark rides
- TRON, if they meet the height requirement and want a bigger thrill
This builds confidence instead of throwing kids straight into the most intense rides. For more age-based planning, my guide to Magic Kingdom rides for kids is a better fit than a pure coaster ranking.
Best Magic Kingdom Coaster Order for Adults and Teens
For adults and teens, I would be more aggressive. Start with the biggest thrill and group the Tomorrowland coasters together when possible.
My adult-focused order would be:
- TRON Lightcycle / Run
- Space Mountain
- Seven Dwarfs Mine Train
- Big Thunder Mountain Railroad
- The Barnstormer, only if you are completing the list
This gives you the strongest thrill start and keeps the day efficient. For a broader adult-focused plan, see my guide to the best Magic Kingdom rides for adults.
Which Magic Kingdom Coaster Is the Most Intense?
TRON is the most intense Magic Kingdom coaster overall because of its launch, speed, and ride position. Space Mountain can feel rougher and more chaotic, but TRON feels more modern and powerful.
Here is how I would rank the Magic Kingdom coasters by intensity:
- TRON Lightcycle / Run
- Space Mountain
- Big Thunder Mountain Railroad
- Seven Dwarfs Mine Train
- The Barnstormer
Seven Dwarfs Mine Train often surprises people because the wait time makes it feel like it should be a major thrill ride. It is really more of a polished family coaster. Big Thunder is more energetic, especially in the back row.
Which Magic Kingdom Coaster Gets the Longest Line?
Seven Dwarfs Mine Train and TRON are usually the two coaster waits I care about most. Space Mountain can also build a long line, but it is often easier to catch during a better window.
Seven Dwarfs Mine Train gets long because almost every type of guest wants to ride it. TRON gets long because it is newer, faster, and one of the biggest thrill rides in the park.
If your main goal is avoiding long waits, compare your coaster plan with my guide to the longest lines at Magic Kingdom.
Should You Use Lightning Lane for Magic Kingdom Coasters?
Yes, I would consider using Lightning Lane for at least one major Magic Kingdom coaster if you want a smoother day. TRON and Seven Dwarfs Mine Train are usually the two most important coaster priorities.
Space Mountain can also be a good Lightning Lane pick, but I would usually put it behind TRON and Seven Dwarfs Mine Train. Big Thunder can be worth it on busy days, but it is often easier to catch naturally if you watch wait times.

Magic Kingdom Coaster Height Requirements
Height requirements can completely change your coaster plan, especially with younger kids. Before you build your ride order, make sure everyone in your group can actually ride your top priorities.
| Roller Coaster | Height Requirement | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| The Barnstormer | 35 inches | Young kids and first-time coaster riders |
| Seven Dwarfs Mine Train | 38 inches | Families and mild coaster fans |
| Big Thunder Mountain Railroad | 38 inches | Families, older kids, and adults |
| Space Mountain | 44 inches | Older kids, teens, and adults |
| TRON Lightcycle / Run | 48 inches | Teens, adults, and thrill seekers |

Best Time of Day to Ride Magic Kingdom Coasters
The best time to ride Magic Kingdom coasters is usually early morning, late evening, or during parade and fireworks windows if you are willing to skip those. Midday is usually the hardest time because crowds are settled in and waits are often higher.
For me, Seven Dwarfs Mine Train is best early or late. TRON is worth prioritizing whenever you can secure a good return time. Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is especially fun at night. Space Mountain can work well midday if the wait is reasonable because it is indoors.
For broader timing strategy, see my guide to the best time to ride Magic Kingdom attractions.
My Simple Coaster Plan for Magic Kingdom
If I were planning a coaster-focused Magic Kingdom day, I would build the whole plan around TRON and Seven Dwarfs Mine Train first. Those are the two coasters most likely to shape your day.
A simple plan would look like this:
- Start with TRON or Space Mountain in Tomorrowland
- Ride Seven Dwarfs Mine Train early or with Lightning Lane
- Save Big Thunder Mountain Railroad for later in the day
- Ride The Barnstormer only if you have younger kids or want to complete every coaster
That is enough structure without overcomplicating the day. You do not need a minute-by-minute plan, but you should know your first two coaster priorities before you enter the park.
