Tokyo Disneyland Roller Coasters Ranked by Thrill Level

Tokyo Disneyland Roller Coasters are easy to rank right now because the park currently has two active coaster-style rides to plan around: Big Thunder Mountain and Gadget’s Go Coaster. Big Thunder Mountain is the clear thrill winner, while Gadget’s Go Coaster is a short, mild starter coaster in Toontown. Space Mountain used to be part of this list, but it closed in 2024 for a major rebuild and is expected to return in 2027, so I would not count it as an active ride for a current trip.

If you only have time for one coaster, ride Big Thunder Mountain. It is the only current Tokyo Disneyland coaster that feels like a true thrill ride. Gadget’s Go Coaster is cute and fun, but it is really best for kids, families, or anyone who wants a quick, low-stakes ride in Toontown.

For a broader park plan, I’d pair this coaster ranking with my guide to the best Tokyo Disneyland rides and my main Tokyo Disneyland guide, because the park’s best attractions are not limited to roller coasters.

Tokyo Disneyland Roller Coasters Ranked by Thrill Level

Here is the current ranking from most thrilling to least thrilling:

  1. Big Thunder Mountain
  2. Gadget’s Go Coaster

That is a short list, but it is the honest one. Tokyo Disneyland is not a coaster-heavy park. It is more of a classic Disney park with a few thrill rides mixed into a much bigger lineup of dark rides, parades, shows, character areas, and atmospheric lands.

If you are mainly chasing intensity, I would also compare these with the park’s non-coaster thrills. My guide to Tokyo Disneyland thrill rides is a better fit if you want every ride that feels exciting, not just rides that are technically roller coasters.

1. Big Thunder Mountain

Big Thunder Mountain is the most thrilling roller coaster at Tokyo Disneyland, and it is the one I would prioritize first if coaster thrills matter to you.

This runaway mine train ride in Westernland has the familiar Disney mix of speed, scenery, tunnels, curves, small drops, and just enough chaos to feel exciting without becoming too intense. It does not go upside down, and it is not scary in the way a major thrill park coaster might be, but it has real momentum and a fun sense of movement.

I like Big Thunder Mountain because it hits that sweet spot between family-friendly and genuinely fun for adults. The ride feels fast enough to wake you up, but not so intense that it shuts out more cautious riders. It also has that old-school Disneyland energy, with rocky scenery and a mine train rhythm that makes it feel more alive than a plain steel coaster.

Thrill level

I would rate Big Thunder Mountain about a 6 out of 10 for Tokyo Disneyland thrill level.

It is the top current coaster in the park, but it is still a moderate Disney thrill ride. Most adults who can handle standard Disney coasters should be fine, while kids who are ready for something beyond gentle rides may see it as a big step up.

Best for

Big Thunder Mountain is best for adults who want the most exciting coaster currently operating at Tokyo Disneyland, families with older kids, and visitors who like classic themed Disney rides.

If it is high on your list, I would ride it earlier in the day or keep an eye on wait times. It appeals to a wide group of guests, so the line can build. If you are weighing paid ride access, compare it with the current Tokyo Disneyland Premier Access rides before deciding what is actually worth buying.

2. Gadget’s Go Coaster

gadgets go coaster

Gadget’s Go Coaster is the least thrilling roller coaster at Tokyo Disneyland, but it does exactly what it is supposed to do. It is a short, playful Toontown coaster that works best as a child’s first coaster or a quick family ride.

This is not something I would send a thrill-seeker across the park for. The ride is mild, small-scale, and over quickly. But if you are already in Toontown, it has charm. The backyard-invention theme fits the land, and for younger kids, it can feel like a real coaster without being overwhelming.

Thrill level

I would rate Gadget’s Go Coaster about a 2.5 out of 10 for thrill level.

It has small dips and turns, but it is more cute than exciting. For adults without kids, I would only ride it if the wait is short or if you are trying to complete every attraction.

Best for

Gadget’s Go Coaster is best for younger kids, families spending time in Toontown, and completionists who want to ride every coaster in the park.

What About Space Mountain at Tokyo Disneyland?

Space Mountain used to be one of the major Tokyo Disneyland roller coasters, but it is not currently operating. The former version closed in 2024, and a rebuilt Space Mountain is expected to open in 2027.

That is important because older coaster lists may still include it. For current trip planning, I would not count Space Mountain as an option until the new version officially opens.

When it returns, I expect it to rank near the top of this list, possibly above Big Thunder Mountain depending on how intense the new version feels. But for now, the practical ranking is Big Thunder Mountain first and Gadget’s Go Coaster second.

Are Tokyo Disneyland Roller Coasters Scary?

Tokyo Disneyland’s current roller coasters are not especially scary. Big Thunder Mountain is exciting but approachable, while Gadget’s Go Coaster is mild and kid-friendly.

The bigger thing to know is that Tokyo Disneyland’s thrill factor is not limited to coasters. Splash Mountain is not a roller coaster, but its final drop feels more intense than Gadget’s Go Coaster. Star Tours can also feel more intense for guests who are sensitive to motion simulators.

That is why I would not judge the park by coaster count alone. Tokyo Disneyland is stronger as a full ride-and-atmosphere park than as a coaster park.

Best Order to Ride the Roller Coasters

If you want to ride both Tokyo Disneyland roller coasters in one day, I would do this:

  1. Ride Big Thunder Mountain first if it is a priority.
  2. Save Gadget’s Go Coaster for when you are already in Toontown.
  3. Do not spend your best morning time on Gadget unless you have small kids who are excited for it.
  4. Check current closures before your visit.

Big Thunder Mountain is the one that deserves strategy. Gadget’s Go Coaster is more of a bonus ride unless you are traveling with kids.

If crowds are your biggest concern, it also helps to check the best time to visit Tokyo Disneyland and when Tokyo Disneyland is least crowded before choosing your park day.

Quick Ranking Summary

RankRoller CoasterThrill LevelBest For
1Big Thunder Mountain6/10Classic Disney coaster thrills
2Gadget’s Go Coaster2.5/10Kids, families, Toontown visitors

If you only ride one Tokyo Disneyland roller coaster, make it Big Thunder Mountain. If you have kids, extra time, or a short wait in Toontown, add Gadget’s Go Coaster. And if Space Mountain is the ride you were hoping for, keep an eye on the rebuilt version expected in 2027.

Near the end of planning, I always recommend checking the official Tokyo Disneyland site for current attraction status, operating details, and temporary closures before you go.
