How Many Disney Princess Movies Are There? The simplest official count is 13 Disney Princess movies, if you are counting the main animated theatrical movies connected to the official Disney Princess lineup. That means one core movie for each official princess: Snow White, Cinderella, Aurora, Ariel, Belle, Jasmine, Pocahontas, Mulan, Tiana, Rapunzel, Merida, Moana, and Raya. The number can look different if you start adding sequels, live-action remakes, Frozen, or unofficial princess characters, but the clean official answer is 13.
How Many Disney Princess Movies Are There?
There are 13 official Disney Princess movies when you count the main animated theatrical film attached to each official Disney Princess.
Here is the official-count version:
| # | Movie | Princess |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs | Snow White |
| 2 | Cinderella | Cinderella |
| 3 | Sleeping Beauty | Aurora |
| 4 | The Little Mermaid | Ariel |
| 5 | Beauty and the Beast | Belle |
| 6 | Aladdin | Jasmine |
| 7 | Pocahontas | Pocahontas |
| 8 | Mulan | Mulan |
| 9 | The Princess and the Frog | Tiana |
| 10 | Tangled | Rapunzel |
| 11 | Brave | Merida |
| 12 | Moana | Moana |
| 13 | Raya and the Last Dragon | Raya |
That is the count I would use if I were answering this from a Disney fan perspective, a parent planning a movie marathon, or someone trying to understand the official Disney Princess brand without getting lost in every sequel and spin-off.
The tricky part is that “Disney princess movie” can mean two different things. It can mean a movie starring an official Disney Princess, or it can mean any Disney movie that includes a princess-like character. Those are not the same thing.
For a cleaner character breakdown, I keep a separate guide to all the Disney princesses, because the character list and the movie list often get mixed together.
The 13 Official Disney Princess Movies in Release Order
If you want to watch the Disney Princess movies in the most straightforward way, release order is the easiest path. It also shows how much the idea of a “Disney Princess movie” has changed over time.
1. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs
Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs is the first official Disney Princess movie and the movie that started the entire tradition. It feels very different from the later princess films because it is simpler, softer, and more storybook-like.
When I think of the classic princess image in the parks, Snow White still has that old Disneyland feeling. She feels tied to the earliest version of Disney storytelling, before the princess brand became its own huge category.
I have a more focused breakdown of what was the first Disney Princess movie if you want the origin story without mixing it into the full count.
2. Cinderella
Cinderella is the second official Disney Princess movie and probably one of the clearest examples of what people picture when they hear “Disney Princess.” The castle, the ball gown, the Fairy Godmother, and the glass slipper all became part of the visual language Disney still uses constantly.
In the parks, Cinderella often feels like the most central “classic” princess, especially at Walt Disney World where Cinderella Castle anchors Magic Kingdom.
3. Sleeping Beauty
Sleeping Beauty gives us Aurora, but it is also one of the most castle-focused princess movies. The funny thing is that Aurora is not on screen as much as people sometimes expect, yet her movie has a huge presence in Disney park design.
At Disneyland, Sleeping Beauty Castle is small compared with some later Disney castles, but it has a storybook charm that fits the movie perfectly.
4. The Little Mermaid
The Little Mermaid is where the modern Disney Princess era really starts to feel different. Ariel has more of a big personality, the music is bigger, and the movie has that energetic late-1980s Disney Renaissance feeling.
Ariel also tends to be one of the princesses visitors recognize quickly in the parks. Her look is distinct, and her attractions and meet-and-greets have stayed popular for years.
5. Beauty and the Beast
Beauty and the Beast is Belle’s movie, and it is one of the strongest princess films if you are judging the movie itself rather than just the character. Belle is also a good example of why the official lineup is not only about royal birth. She becomes connected to royalty through the story, but what makes her memorable is her curiosity, independence, and warmth.
This one still feels especially strong in the parks because the castle, village, library, and ballroom imagery are so recognizable.
6. Aladdin
Aladdin is Jasmine’s official Disney Princess movie, even though Aladdin is technically the title character. This is one reason the count can confuse people. Not every official princess movie is named after the princess.
Jasmine is part of the official lineup, so Aladdin counts as one of the 13 official Disney Princess movies.
7. Pocahontas
Pocahontas is another official Disney Princess movie, though it has a different tone from the fairy tale films. It is more serious, more nature-focused, and less castle-centered.
In the parks, Pocahontas does not usually feel as heavily represented as Cinderella, Belle, Ariel, or Tiana, but she still belongs in the official princess count.
8. Mulan
Mulan is one of the best examples of why the Disney Princess title does not always mean “born royal” or “married a prince.” Mulan is not a princess in the traditional sense, but she is part of the official Disney Princess lineup.
That is why I would still count Mulan as an official Disney Princess movie. The franchise definition matters more than whether the character wears a crown.
9. The Princess and the Frog
The Princess and the Frog is Tiana’s movie, and it feels especially important because Tiana brought a new kind of ambition and work ethic into the princess lineup. Her story is not just about romance or royalty. It is also about building something of her own.
From a park perspective, Tiana has become even more visible in recent years, especially with Tiana-themed areas and attractions becoming a bigger part of the Disney experience.
10. Tangled
Tangled is Rapunzel’s official Disney Princess movie. This is one of the easiest modern entries to understand because Rapunzel is both a princess by birth and the clear center of the story.
The movie also bridges classic princess storytelling with a more modern tone. It has the tower, the long hair, and the fairy tale setup, but it moves faster and has more comedy than the older films.
11. Brave
Brave gives us Merida, and it stands out because it is a Pixar movie rather than a Walt Disney Animation Studios movie. She is still part of the official Disney Princess lineup, so Brave belongs in the official count.
Merida also changes the feel of the list because her movie is not built around a romance. It is more about family, independence, and choosing your own path.
12. Moana
Moana is one of the more interesting entries because Moana herself makes a joke in the movie about whether she is a princess. Officially, she is part of the Disney Princess lineup, so Moana counts as one of the 13 official Disney Princess movies.
She also feels very present in the parks now. Moana has that adventure-forward energy that fits modern Disney really well, especially in areas where Disney leans into nature, water, and exploration.
13. Raya and the Last Dragon
Raya and the Last Dragon is the newest core movie in the official Disney Princess count. Raya has a different tone from many earlier princesses because her story is more action-adventure than musical fairy tale.
This is also where the princess category feels the most flexible. Raya is not the old castle-and-ball-gown version of a Disney Princess, but she is official, so her movie counts.
For a cleaner viewing list, I also keep a separate guide to the Disney Princess movies in order.
Why Some Disney Movies Do Not Count
This is where most of the confusion comes from. Disney has many princesses, queens, heroines, royal characters, and princess-like leads, but not all of them are part of the official Disney Princess lineup.
The official movie count stays at 13 because it follows the official princess roster, not every Disney character who could loosely be called a princess.
Do Frozen Movies Count as Disney Princess Movies?
I would not include Frozen or Frozen II in the official Disney Princess movie count.
Anna and Elsa are royal characters, and they are obviously some of Disney’s most popular modern heroines. But they are not part of the official Disney Princess lineup in the same way Snow White, Ariel, Belle, Tiana, Moana, and Raya are.
That is why adding Frozen changes the answer from “official Disney Princess movies” into “Disney movies with princesses or queens.” Those are different lists.
I explain that distinction more directly in my article on whether Anna and Elsa are Disney Princesses.
Do Sequels Count?
For the official count, I would not include direct-to-video sequels, theatrical sequels, TV specials, or follow-up stories.
That means I would not add movies like The Little Mermaid II, Cinderella II, Mulan II, or Moana 2 to the official core count. Those may be Disney princess-related movies, but they are not usually what people mean when they ask for the official number of Disney Princess movies.
This keeps the answer much cleaner: 13 main official movies, not every sequel connected to a princess.
Do Live-Action Remakes Count?
I would also keep live-action remakes separate.
Live-action versions of Cinderella, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, Mulan, The Little Mermaid, and Snow White can be fun to compare, but they do not create new official princesses. They are retellings of movies already represented in the official lineup.
So if you are making a complete Disney princess-themed watchlist, you can absolutely add the remakes. But if you are asking for the official count, I would not use them to increase the number.
The Difference Between Official and Unofficial Princess Movies
A good rule of thumb is this: if the movie features one of the official Disney Princess characters, it can fit the official Disney Princess movie count. If it features a princess-like character who is not in the official lineup, it belongs in a broader unofficial category.
That is where characters like Anna, Elsa, Alice, Megara, Esmeralda, Kida, Vanellope, Mirabel, and Asha often come up. Some are royal, some feel princess-adjacent, and some are major Disney heroines, but that does not automatically make their films official Disney Princess movies.
For that wider conversation, my guide to honorary Disney Princesses is more helpful than trying to stretch the official movie count.
My Practical Answer for a Disney Princess Movie Marathon
If I were planning a Disney Princess movie marathon, I would start with the 13 official movies first. That gives you the cleanest version of the list without turning the marathon into an endless Disney animation project.
For a shorter version, I would group them like this:
| Era | Movies |
| Classic era | Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty |
| Disney Renaissance | The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, Pocahontas, Mulan |
| Modern era | The Princess and the Frog, Tangled, Brave, Moana, Raya and the Last Dragon |
That is also how I mentally sort them when I see the princesses represented in the parks. The classics feel tied to castles and old Fantasyland. The Renaissance princesses feel tied to big songs, big characters, and themed lands. The modern princesses feel more adventurous, individual, and less locked into the old fairy tale formula.
If you are trying to understand the current character roster instead of the movie count, my official Disney Princess list is the better companion piece.
For the official Disney Princess source, you can also check Disney’s own Disney Princess site near the end of your search. I would only use a higher number if you are intentionally including sequels, live-action remakes, Frozen films, or unofficial princess-adjacent characters.
