Disney World Reentry Rules: Leaving and Coming Back the Same Day

Yes, you can leave Disney World and come back to the same park later that day. You do not need a Park Hopper ticket just to leave EPCOT, Magic Kingdom, Hollywood Studios or Animal Kingdom and reenter that same park. You simply need valid admission for that day.

This is especially useful if you want to take a midday break at your hotel, eat somewhere outside the park or escape the hottest part of the afternoon before returning for dinner and nighttime entertainment.

The Disney World reentry policy is fairly simple, but reentering the same park, park hopping and leaving a Disney parking lot are three slightly different situations. Here’s how each one works.

Disney World Reentry Policy: What You Need to Come Back

If you leave one of the four Walt Disney World theme parks, you can normally return to that same park later in the day using the same valid admission.

Disney’s current entry system does not rely on the old hand-stamp system. When you return, you’ll use your linked admission, such as a MagicBand or Disney MagicMobile pass, at the park entrance just as you did earlier in the day.

You don’t need to purchase another ticket, and you don’t need the Park Hopper option if you’re simply returning to the same park.

Disney’s official ticket Help Center specifically notes that linked tickets can be used to enter and reenter the park.

Can You Leave EPCOT and Come Back Later?

Yes. You can leave EPCOT and come back later the same day with valid EPCOT admission. You don’t have to stay inside the park continuously from your first entry until closing.

This can actually be a useful strategy at EPCOT because the park often has long operating days. You might visit attractions in the morning, head back to your hotel for a few hours and return in the evening for World Showcase, dinner or the nighttime show.

You Can Leave Magic Kingdom and Return Too

Magic Kingdom follows the same basic rule. You can leave during the day and return to Magic Kingdom later with valid admission.

A midday break can make even more sense here because getting from the park back to your car takes longer than it does at some of the other Disney World parks. The main parking lot is actually at the Transportation and Ticket Center rather than directly outside the Magic Kingdom entrance.

Reentry Is Not the Same Thing as Park Hopping

This is where the policy gets confusing.

If you leave EPCOT and return to EPCOT, that’s simply reentry. If you leave EPCOT and go to Magic Kingdom, that’s park hopping, and you’ll need admission that includes Park Hopper benefits.

The old rule requiring guests to wait until 2 PM to park hop is no longer in effect. Guests with Park Hopper benefits can currently visit another theme park at any time during park hours after entering their first park, subject to capacity restrictions.

So you could start at EPCOT in the morning and move to Magic Kingdom before 2 PM if you wanted to. My EPCOT to Magic Kingdom guide compares the transportation options between the two parks.

What About Park Reservations?

Most guests using regular date-based Disney World tickets no longer need theme park reservations.

Annual Passholders and guests using certain other admission types may still have reservation requirements. If a reservation is required for your admission type, make sure you’ve satisfied those requirements before relying on Park Hopper access.

Can You Leave Disney World Parking and Come Back?

Yes. Disney World theme park parking is good for the day at all four theme parks. If you’ve paid to park and later leave, you don’t normally pay a second theme park parking fee when you return that day.

The same parking payment can also be used if you drive from one Disney World theme park to another during the same day.

There is one limitation that’s worth knowing: Disney says paying for parking does not guarantee that a parking space will still be available if you leave and return later or drive to a different park. That’s mostly something I’d keep in mind on extremely busy dates.

Taking a Midday Break Doesn’t Use Another Park Admission

A common reason people ask about Disney World reentry is because they’re considering leaving for several hours in the middle of the day.

You can absolutely do that. Leaving the park doesn’t end your admission for the day.

For families with small children, anyone visiting during the hotter months or guests staying close to a park, I’ve found the idea of a few hours away from the crowds much more appealing than trying to stay inside a park from rope drop until fireworks.

You’ll Go Through Security Again When You Return

Leaving and reentering doesn’t let you bypass the normal park-entry process. If you return with bags or other belongings, they’ll still be subject to Disney’s normal security screening.

If you’re planning to bring something back into the park, particularly food, drinks or a larger bag, it’s worth checking the Disney World bag policy first.

Outside snacks and many drinks are permitted, but Disney limits certain containers, cooler sizes and other items. My Disney World outside food policy covers those rules in more detail.

What Could Prevent You From Reentering?

Same-day reentry is normally straightforward, but park admission is still subject to Disney’s rules and capacity restrictions.

A regular theme park ticket also doesn’t give you admission to a separately ticketed event simply because you were inside that park earlier in the day. Events requiring separate admission have their own ticket requirements.

Disney also states that applicable admission and identification confirmation may be required for entry and reentry, so keep access to your ticket or linked admission even if you plan to leave only briefly.
