Disney’s Animal Kingdom has two water-based rides, but they offer completely different experiences. Kali River Rapids is a whitewater rafting attraction where you can get soaked, while Na’vi River Journey is a gentle indoor boat ride through Pandora where guests normally stay dry.
If you’re looking for a water ride at Animal Kingdom that will cool you down, Kali River Rapids is the one to choose. If you want a peaceful boat ride without the splashes, Na’vi River Journey is the better option.
Here’s how the two rides compare, including height requirements, drops, how wet you might get, and whether either is worth spending time on during your Animal Kingdom visit.
What Water Rides Are at Animal Kingdom?
There are two attractions at Disney’s Animal Kingdom where guests ride in boats or rafts on water: Kali River Rapids in Asia and Na’vi River Journey in Pandora.

These rides aren’t interchangeable. Kali River Rapids is designed around rushing water, splashes, and an exciting drop. Na’vi River Journey uses a calm boat system to carry guests through an elaborate indoor environment.
That is why I would separate Animal Kingdom’s water rides into two categories: one ride where water is part of the thrill, and another where water is simply how the attraction moves.
Kali River Rapids: Animal Kingdom’s Splashing Water Ride

Kali River Rapids is the only Animal Kingdom attraction specifically designed to get riders wet.
The ride takes place aboard large circular rafts that travel through the fictional Chakranadi River. Along the route, you encounter rushing rapids, waterfalls, tropical vegetation, and a dramatic downhill section.
The attraction has a 20-foot slope, but the biggest surprise isn’t necessarily the drop. It’s how unpredictable the splashes can be.
The circular raft rotates as it moves through the water, so you can’t reliably predict which side will take the biggest splash. Someone sitting beside you might get drenched while you receive considerably less water, or the opposite could happen.
Disney specifically warns that guests will get splashed and may become soaked. I would prepare for the possibility of getting very wet rather than assuming a particular seat will keep you dry.
How Wet Do You Get on Kali River Rapids?
You can get completely soaked on Kali River Rapids. The amount varies from ride to ride because of the raft’s position and how the water hits it.
Some guests finish with wet shirts and shoes, while others receive lighter splashes. There is no reliable way to guarantee a dry ride.
If I were planning to ride Kali River Rapids, I would protect my phone, avoid wearing clothing that dries slowly, and consider bringing a change of socks.
Disney provides lockers across from the attraction entrance for mobile devices and other belongings you want to keep dry. Locker availability is first come, first served.
A waterproof poncho can help protect your upper body, but water may still reach your legs, shoes, and seat area. It is better to prepare for getting wet than rely on a poncho to keep everything dry.
Is Kali River Rapids Scary?
Kali River Rapids is exciting without being an extreme thrill ride. It features spinning raft movement, turbulent water, a 20-foot descent, and substantial splashes.
For guests who enjoy water rides, those elements are usually part of the fun. However, children who are nervous about sudden drops, moving water, or getting soaked may find the experience intimidating.
Riders must be at least 38 inches tall. Meeting that height requirement doesn’t necessarily mean every child will enjoy the attraction.
I would consider Kali River Rapids a moderate family thrill ride rather than something comparable to Expedition Everest.
Na’vi River Journey: Animal Kingdom’s Gentle Boat Ride

Na’vi River Journey is the other water-based attraction at Animal Kingdom, although it’s easy to overlook when discussing water rides because it isn’t designed to splash guests.
The attraction takes you aboard a slow-moving boat through Pandora’s bioluminescent rainforest. Along the route, glowing plants, alien wildlife, music, and detailed visual effects create the impression of traveling through an otherworldly river environment.
One of the highlights is the Na’vi Shaman of Songs, an elaborate Audio-Animatronic character encountered near the end of the journey.
Unlike Kali River Rapids, Na’vi River Journey doesn’t feature significant drops, whitewater rapids, or intentional splashing. It is a scenic dark ride that uses water as its transportation system.
Do You Get Wet on Na’vi River Journey?
No, guests normally stay dry on Na’vi River Journey. Although you ride in a boat, there are no deliberate soaking effects or large splashes.
It’s a much better option for someone who enjoys boat rides but doesn’t want wet clothes or shoes afterward.
Na’vi River Journey also has no minimum height requirement, making it accessible to families with young children. The indoor environment is dark, though, and some of its glowing creatures and sound effects may be unusual for very sensitive kids.

Which Animal Kingdom Water Ride Is Better?
I wouldn’t choose between Kali River Rapids and Na’vi River Journey based on a traditional ride ranking. They serve different purposes.
- For cooling off on a hot day: Kali River Rapids, because getting wet is part of the experience.
- For young children: Na’vi River Journey, because it has no height requirement and gentle movement.
- For adventure and moderate thrills: Kali River Rapids, with its whitewater sections and 20-foot slope.
- For elaborate Disney scenery: Na’vi River Journey, with its bioluminescent rainforest and Shaman of Songs.
- For staying completely dry: Na’vi River Journey is the obvious choice.
For me, Kali River Rapids is more fun when the weather is hot and I actively want a splash ride. Na’vi River Journey is the stronger choice when I want a calm, immersive attraction without dealing with wet clothing.

When Is the Best Time to Ride Kali River Rapids?
I would usually save Kali River Rapids for late morning or the afternoon rather than making it the first attraction of the day.
That gives you an opportunity to experience your major ride priorities first, then use Kali River Rapids as a refreshing break when temperatures rise.
The drawback is that warm afternoons can also make water rides more appealing to other visitors. Standby waits may become longer, particularly during busy vacation periods.
If the posted wait is short, I would take advantage of it. If the queue is approaching an hour and my group isn’t particularly interested in getting wet, I would probably spend that time on another attraction.
I would also avoid riding immediately before leaving the park if I expected to get into a car or bus wearing wet clothes.
Weather is another consideration. Disney notes that Kali River Rapids’ operating hours can change during inclement weather, so check the current attraction status before heading across the park.
Is Kali River Rapids Worth Lightning Lane?
Kali River Rapids and Na’vi River Journey are both included among the attractions offered through Lightning Lane Multi Pass at Animal Kingdom, subject to availability.
However, I wouldn’t purchase Lightning Lane Multi Pass solely for Kali River Rapids unless it was a major priority and the expected wait justified the expense.
For most visitors, I would first consider how much time the pass could save at other attractions, including Expedition Everest, Kilimanjaro Safaris, or Na’vi River Journey.
If you already have Multi Pass, a Kali River Rapids selection may be a convenient addition when its standby queue is long.

Are Animal Kingdom Water Rides Good for Kids?
Both rides can work for families, but age, height, and comfort with water make a difference.
Na’vi River Journey is the easier option for very young children. Its slow-moving boats and lack of a minimum height requirement make it suitable for a wider range of families, although it takes place in a dark indoor environment.
Kali River Rapids is better for children who meet the 38-inch requirement and are comfortable with splashing water, spinning raft movement, and a moderate drop.
Parents should prepare children for the possibility of getting completely soaked. For some kids, that will be the highlight of the ride. For others, it could make the rest of the park day uncomfortable.

Does Animal Kingdom Have Any Other Water Rides?
Kali River Rapids and Na’vi River Journey are the park’s two water-based rides.
Kilimanjaro Safaris may pass waterways and animal habitats, but guests travel in a safari vehicle rather than a boat. Avatar Flight of Passage simulates flying through Pandora, but it isn’t a conventional water ride.
Animal Kingdom also has waterfalls, rivers, and aquatic scenery throughout its themed lands. Those environmental features aren’t additional ride attractions.

Should You Ride Both Animal Kingdom Water Rides?
If you have a full day at Animal Kingdom, both are worth considering because they offer completely different experiences.
I would work Na’vi River Journey into a visit to Pandora, particularly if I were already exploring the area around Avatar Flight of Passage. Kali River Rapids makes more sense while touring Asia, especially on a warm afternoon.
If I had limited time, I wouldn’t automatically prioritize both. Families with younger children may get more from Na’vi River Journey, while guests who enjoy whitewater attractions may prefer Kali River Rapids.
