If I’m choosing between Animal Kingdom Lodge and Wilderness Lodge, I pick Wilderness Lodge for a park-heavy Disney World trip and Animal Kingdom Lodge when I want the resort itself to be part of the vacation. I’ve stayed at both, and that’s the difference that matters more to me than comparing pools or room decor feature by feature.
Wilderness Lodge gives me easier access to Magic Kingdom and the option of traveling by boat. Animal Kingdom Lodge gives me something no other Disney resort can really duplicate: savannas filled with giraffes, zebras and other animals right outside the hotel.
They’re both Deluxe Resorts, but they create two completely different Disney trips.
I’d Book Wilderness Lodge When the Parks Come First
If I’m getting up early, spending long days in the parks and returning to the hotel mostly to eat, swim and sleep, Wilderness Lodge is usually the easier choice.
The biggest reason is Magic Kingdom. Wilderness Lodge is in Disney’s Magic Kingdom Resort Area and has water transportation as well as Disney bus service. I really like being able to leave Magic Kingdom and take a boat back to the resort instead of automatically heading for another bus.
That convenience becomes more noticeable over several days. A beautiful resort doesn’t help much if getting back to it starts feeling like another part of the park day.
If Magic Kingdom is going to dominate your itinerary, I’d also compare Wilderness Lodge with the other best Disney hotels for Magic Kingdom access before booking.
Animal Kingdom Lodge Is the One I’d Choose to Slow Down
Animal Kingdom Lodge makes much more sense to me on a trip where I deliberately leave time for the hotel.
The resort is built around four savannas where Disney says more than 200 animals and birds live. You can see giraffes, zebras, gazelles, kudu and other species from designated viewing areas, and savanna-view rooms put that experience directly outside your balcony.
That’s why I don’t think of Animal Kingdom Lodge as simply another Deluxe hotel that’s inconveniently located. The distance is part of the tradeoff. You’re giving up some transportation convenience to stay somewhere that feels much more removed from the rest of Walt Disney World.
There are trips where that sounds terrible to me, and others where it’s exactly what I want.
One Important Clarification: Wilderness Lodge Is Not at Animal Kingdom
The names make this surprisingly easy to mix up.
Disney’s Wilderness Lodge is in the Magic Kingdom Resort Area. It has a Pacific Northwest national park lodge theme and sits near Bay Lake.
Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge is in the Animal Kingdom Resort Area. It’s the resort with the African savannas and large animals.
Wilderness Lodge doesn’t have Animal Kingdom Lodge-style savannas with giraffes and zebras. Its nature theme comes from forests, water, rustic architecture and the American Northwest rather than an animal preserve.
Transportation Is Where I Notice the Difference Every Day
Animal Kingdom Lodge currently relies on Disney motorcoach transportation for the theme parks. There isn’t a monorail, Skyliner station or boat connection to the parks from the resort.
That doesn’t bother me much on a resort-focused trip. It bothers me more when I’m trying to move around Walt Disney World several times in one day.
Wilderness Lodge has Disney buses too, but Magic Kingdom is the exception because you can use watercraft. That one alternative is enough to change how the resort feels to me logistically.
I wouldn’t hard-code promises like a specific 20- or 30-minute travel time into this comparison. Actual waits and transportation times can change substantially depending on when you’re traveling.

Animal Kingdom Lodge Wins the “I Can’t Get This Somewhere Else” Test
This is where Animal Kingdom Lodge becomes difficult to compare with almost any other Disney hotel.
I can find another resort with convenient transportation. I can find another good pool. I can find another dramatic lobby.
I can’t stay at another Disney World hotel and wake up, step onto my balcony and watch giraffes moving across a savanna.
If I’m paying extra for a savanna-view room, that’s what I’m paying for. Disney currently offers standard Animal Kingdom Lodge rooms with resort, water and savanna views, and the regular rooms generally sleep up to four adults.
I don’t think everyone needs the upgraded view, because there are animal-viewing areas around the resort. But if the animals are the main reason you’re staying there, the savanna view is the room category I’d be tempted to splurge on.
Wilderness Lodge Wins When I Want Disney Without Constant Disney Noise
Wilderness Lodge feels completely different even though it is much closer to Magic Kingdom.
The huge timber lobby, stone fireplace, trees, water and national-park-lodge design create a resort that feels surprisingly removed from the park next door. That’s probably my favorite thing about it.
I can spend the morning at Magic Kingdom and then come back to something that doesn’t feel like an extension of Fantasyland.
Geyser Point is particularly good for this. Sitting outside beside Bay Lake in the evening is one of those small resort experiences that makes Wilderness Lodge feel more like a vacation hotel than simply somewhere convenient to sleep.
Dining Is Where Animal Kingdom Lodge Has the Edge for Me
If I were choosing these two resorts based purely on food, I’d take Animal Kingdom Lodge.
Jiko and Boma are at Jambo House, while Sanaa is over at Kidani Village. Sanaa is probably the restaurant I associate most strongly with staying here because the African cooking with Indian flavors fits the resort instead of feeling like something that could have been dropped into any Disney hotel.
The bread service alone has become one of those meals I actually think about when planning a return trip.

Wilderness Lodge isn’t weak here. Whispering Canyon Cafe gives you a lively family-style meal, Geyser Point is one of my favorite casual places to sit outside, Roaring Fork handles quick-service meals and Story Book Dining at Artist Point adds a character-dining option.
I just find the Animal Kingdom Lodge dining lineup more distinctive.
I Wouldn’t Choose Based on the Standard Rooms Alone
The room comparison matters less to me than location and resort experience.
Disney currently lists regular rooms and suites at both resorts, along with larger Disney Vacation Club accommodations. Standard hotel rooms at both generally top out at four adults, although suites and villas can accommodate larger groups.
Animal Kingdom Lodge has the more meaningful room upgrade because the view can completely change the experience. A savanna-view balcony isn’t just a nicer angle over the landscaping. It’s part of the reason people book the hotel.
At Wilderness Lodge, I care more about where the room sits within the resort and what I’m paying than chasing a particular room feature.

The Pools Wouldn’t Decide It for Me Either
Both resorts have enough going on around the pools that I wouldn’t eliminate either one because of swimming.
Animal Kingdom Lodge’s Uzima Springs Pool has a waterslide and zero-depth entry, and guests also have access to the pool area at Kidani Village. Wilderness Lodge has the more active Copper Creek Springs Pool as well as the quieter Boulder Ridge Cove Pool.
I enjoy both setups, but neither changes my decision. By the time I’m paying Deluxe Resort prices, transportation, atmosphere and what I can actually experience at the hotel matter more to me.
The Choice Comes Down to What Kind of Disney Trip I’m Taking
I’d choose Wilderness Lodge for a shorter trip, a Magic Kingdom-heavy itinerary, or a vacation where I expect to leave the resort early and return late. The location and boat transportation are advantages I’ll actually use every day.
I’d choose Animal Kingdom Lodge for a slower trip with resort time built in, especially if good food and the animal experience are part of the reason I’m going. I wouldn’t book it and then spend every waking hour somewhere else.
If the prices were similar and I had no itinerary yet, Wilderness Lodge would probably be my safer all-around choice. Animal Kingdom Lodge is the more unusual choice, but that’s also exactly why I’d pick it when I want the hotel itself to be memorable.
Neither is simply the better Disney resort. They’re better at completely different things, which is why my answer changes depending on the trip.
