Animal Kingdom has three main thrill rides worth considering if you want speed, drops or intense motion: Expedition Everest, Avatar Flight of Passage and Kali River Rapids.
Expedition Everest is the strongest traditional thrill ride, with a fast-moving roller coaster, backward motion and real drops. Flight of Passage can feel just as intense, but its thrills come from simulated flight and immersive 3D effects. Kali River Rapids is the mildest of the three overall, although it includes a substantial water drop.
The right choice depends on what makes you nervous. Someone who enjoys roller coasters might find Flight of Passage uncomfortable because of the motion simulation, while a person who dislikes actual drops might prefer the simulator over Everest.

1. Expedition Everest: The Most Intense Physical Ride
Expedition Everest is the scariest Animal Kingdom ride for someone who dislikes actual roller coaster drops. The attraction combines high speeds, sudden changes in direction, dark sections and an unexpected backward portion.
The ride begins as a train journey through the Himalayas. After climbing the mountain, your train encounters a broken track. The resulting backward section sends you into darkness before the ride continues through the mountain.
Some of the intensity comes from not being able to see exactly where the train is going. The Yeti storyline, loud sounds and dark environments add another layer for riders who are easily frightened.
What to expect:
- A genuine roller coaster with fast turns and drops
- A backward section in darkness
- Loud sounds and frightening creature effects
- No upside-down inversions
Everest is my first recommendation for adults and older kids who specifically want a coaster. But if you’ve never been comfortable with fast drops, don’t assume it’s gentle simply because it’s in a Disney park.

2. Avatar Flight of Passage: The Most Intense Simulator
Avatar Flight of Passage doesn’t have the physical track or large coaster drops of Expedition Everest. Instead, you sit on a motorcycle-style ride vehicle and experience a simulated flight on the back of a banshee.
The enormous 3D screen and synchronized vehicle movement create convincing sensations of climbing, turning and diving through Pandora. For some riders, those simulated movements can feel more intense than a traditional coaster.
Flight of Passage is the attraction I’d approach most cautiously if you’re sensitive to motion simulators or 3D effects. The visuals can create a strong feeling of movement even though you’re not traveling through actual coaster drops.
Does Flight of Passage Have Drops?
Flight of Passage creates the sensation of steep drops and dives, but it doesn’t send you down a large physical drop like Expedition Everest. The experience relies on screen imagery and synchronized ride motion.
If your fear is specifically about the stomach-dropping sensation of a roller coaster, you may find this easier than Everest. If you dislike simulated motion, heights or the feeling of flying, it could be the more challenging ride.

3. Kali River Rapids: A Water Ride With a Real Drop
Kali River Rapids is different from the other two attractions because much of its excitement comes from moving water and the unpredictable orientation of your raft.
Disney describes the ride as including a 20-foot drop. The raft also moves through churning rapids and past waterfalls, so you won’t necessarily know which direction you’ll be facing when the biggest splash arrives.
For most thrill-ride fans, Kali River Rapids feels milder than Everest or Flight of Passage. However, the drop is real, and it’s worth considering carefully if you dislike water slides or sudden descents.
The other important factor is getting wet. Disney warns that riders may be soaked rather than merely splashed. Protect your phone and other belongings, especially if you have plans immediately afterward.

Which Animal Kingdom Rides Should You Avoid If You Hate Drops?
Not every intense ride is frightening for the same reason. Here’s how I’d narrow down the choices based on what bothers you.
- If you hate real coaster drops: Avoid Expedition Everest. It has the park’s strongest combination of speed, descent and backward motion.
- If you hate motion simulators: Be cautious with Avatar Flight of Passage. Its 3D imagery and vehicle movement can create powerful sensations of flying and falling.
- If you hate sudden water drops: Think twice about Kali River Rapids, which includes a 20-foot descent.
- If you dislike darkness and loud effects: Expedition Everest is the strongest concern of these three.
A rider who enjoys Everest might still feel uncomfortable on Flight of Passage, and someone who loves simulators might dislike Everest’s physical drops. Choose based on the type of motion you tolerate, not just whether a ride is labeled thrilling.
The Best Animal Kingdom Rides for People Who Don’t Like Thrills
Animal Kingdom has worthwhile rides for visitors who don’t want to experience any of the three attractions above.
Na’vi River Journey
This slow-moving boat ride through Pandora’s glowing rainforest has no height requirement. It’s an especially good choice if you want to experience the Avatar-themed environment without the simulated flight of Flight of Passage.
There are no major coaster-style drops, and the ride focuses on scenery, music and detailed effects.
Kilimanjaro Safaris
Kilimanjaro Safaris takes guests through an animal reserve aboard an open-air safari vehicle. It has no height requirement and no roller coaster drops.
The vehicle can bounce on uneven roads, so it isn’t completely motion-free. However, the primary experience is observing animals rather than experiencing speed or thrills.

Does Animal Kingdom Have Roller Coasters?
Expedition Everest is Animal Kingdom’s only operating roller coaster. Flight of Passage is a motion simulator, and Kali River Rapids is a whitewater rafting attraction.
This is why Animal Kingdom feels different from a park built around consecutive thrill rides. Its major attractions use different ride systems, and much of the park is dedicated to animal experiences, immersive environments and live entertainment.
What Happened to DINOSAUR at Animal Kingdom?
DINOSAUR was previously one of Animal Kingdom’s most intense attractions because of its dark setting, loud effects and rough vehicle movement. However, DINOSAUR permanently closed on February 2, 2026, with its final operating day on February 1.
Disney is replacing DinoLand U.S.A. with a Tropical Americas area planned for 2027. The development includes an Indiana Jones attraction called Indiana Jones and the Myth of the Jade Serpent, but that ride is not part of Animal Kingdom’s current operating thrill-ride lineup.
Which Thrill Ride Should You Prioritize First?
For most thrill seekers, I’d make Expedition Everest and Avatar Flight of Passage the two priorities. They offer completely different experiences, and together they cover what makes Animal Kingdom’s thrill lineup interesting.
If your group especially enjoys roller coasters, start with Everest. If you’re more interested in ambitious visual effects and immersive ride design, prioritize Flight of Passage.
Kali River Rapids is worth adding when the weather is warm and everyone is comfortable getting wet. I wouldn’t place it ahead of the other two unless water rides are a particular favorite.
Animal Kingdom doesn’t have a huge collection of thrill rides, but the three it does offer are markedly different. Knowing whether you prefer real drops, simulated flight or water-based excitement makes it much easier to choose the right attractions for your day.
