The Haunted Mansion 50th Anniversary

Dive into the past and learn what happened at the Haunted Mansion 50th Anniversary celebration.

The quintessential Disneyland rides are full of original ideas. But none more memorable or original as the Haunted Mansion. Just recently was the Haunted Mansion 50th Anniversary celebration at Disneyland California.

Seemingly outlandish creations — spinning tea cups or a classic cruise through the jungle — have less of a chance of being built into our modern day theme parks. What does seem to take priority are creating rides based on popular movies and characters.

However, we can’t forget the classic rides that have stood the test of time since the 60’s at Disneyland. Which is why we are more than happy to celebrate the Haunted Mansion 50th anniversary. Eccentric and a little dark wasn’t too shied upon the Haunted Mansion really made an impact on guest of Disneyland in 1969.

We can’t seem to get the scenarios out of our minds. Even from the first few moments of the attract, where a room without exits stretches, taking us into another world. The mysterious and whacky (often outlandish behavior) of ghouls and ghosts were welcomed into the park.

A creepy bride makes company with a king and queen on a seesaw. Let’s not forget the singing heads appearing next to you in the ride, melody-dromadic ghosts singing their hearts out, an eerie organ, an all-seeing psychic… oh, and not to mention the dancing ghosts in the ballroom.

As you are taken through the ride you are thrown into the middle of a never-ending gala party. A party for the rich, old, young, and poor. Everyone is welcomed.

The Haunted Mansion, which has made it 50 years unquestionably unique and sprinkled with classic illusions, has earned a place in Disneyland’s history. The Haunted Mansion eventually became Disneyland’s most sought-after ride. The Haunted Mansion is still popular today at different Disney parks around the world.

Sure the celebration was great, but the merch was to… ehemm… to die for.

Essentially, when Disney releases any merchandise Haunted Mansion related… they go crazy.

The Haunted Mansion 50th Anniversary didn’t let down. On this Haunted Mansion 50th anniversary of the ride’s opening day, Aug. 9, 1969, Disney Nerds came prepared. Many of whom brought along three or five Ikea sized bags. Patiently waiting for new Haunted Mansion 5oth Anniversary merch bright and early at 9 a.m.

The Haunted Mansion 5oth Anniversary continued the celebration into the night at an after-hours Disneyland event.

The event was a great time to collect merchandise or dine on unique, limited-time food offerings. The event, held after 11:30 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday.

The facade of the mansion was glowing in a purple light for the special event. With many many wreaths showcasing 50th anniversary signs.

There were also Anniversary logo projections displayed along the ride load area and Madame Leota’s séance circle.

Probably the most memorable aspect of the Haunted Mansion 50th Anniversary celebration was how they included live actors throughout the actual Haunted Mansion ride. Which makes us Nerds wish they would do this all year round for the actual ride.
